Women covering their feet during salaah

Fatwaa ID: 1598

Question:
Assalmu Allikum. We are hanafi madhab .Do women have to cover their feet with socks and pray ? Some people are saying salah is not accepted if we don’t cover our feet .Please let me know

Jazak’Allah Khairan

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

According to the Hanafi legal school, the ‘awrah in salaah and out of salaah is the same. The feet, i.e. beyond the ankle, are not from the ‘awrah. Thus, it is not necessary to cover them during salaah.

It should be noted that some of the non-Hanafi jurists do regard the feet to be from the ‘awrah of salaah for a woman. Each person is advised to follow the ruling of her legal school. This should not be made a matter of dispute. Mutual tolerance and respect must be maintained.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
