Women making i’tikaaf in the masjid

Fatwaa ID: 1034

Question:
As-salāmuʿalykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh,

If a masjid has set up iʿtikāf for women in the masjid totally closed off to men, and a woman does iʿtikāf there. What is the ruling for it (makrūh, bid ʿah, ḥarām…)?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

According to the Hanafi legal school, i’tikaaf for women may only be observed in the confines of her house in that area which has been designated for salaah. She may not observe i’tikaaf in the masjid. The other legal schools however do permit women to observe i’tikaaf in the masjid. One is advised to adhere to the laws of his/her legal school.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
