Question:
AssalamuAlaikum respected scholars,
Is it permissible for women to purchase larger outer garments, primarily hoodies and sweaters, or long coats from the men’s section since the clothes in the men’s section are generally more conservative? Or would it be considered as women dressing like men?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Nabi ﷺ has cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men. If a garment is such that it is culturally or apparently deemed as unisex, such as large hoodies, then it will be permissible for both genders to wear it, irrespective of which side of the store it is found in.
