Working at a funeral home and graveyard

Fatwaa ID: 1526

Question:
Assalamualaikum is there any benefit in working at a funeral home/graveyard and is it permissible to work at a Non Muslim graveyard?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When it comes to earning an income, in many cases a person is able to make multiple intentions and thereby increase and multiply his rewards. Hence, a person should choose such jobs and careers wherein the rewards and benefits are greater, especially considering the Hereafter.

Working at a funeral home and/or in the graveyard is permissible. One should firstly intend earning a halaal income. Secondly, both of these jobs are such that he will be able to fulfill the rights of his Muslim brothers/sisters. From the rights a Muslim enjoys on another Muslim is the final bath and the burial. By doing these, he fulfills these last rights and in reality serves the entire community. He is also able to bring comfort to the bereaving family through this.

You may refer to the following fatwaa for virtues of washing the deceased: https://askthemufti.us/virtues-of-washing-the-deceased/.

Aside from the above, such a job benefits a person spiritually. It constantly reminds him of death and the Hereafter. It allows him to focus on the purpose of his life.

As for working in a non-Muslim graveyard, it is permissible albeit unadvisable.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
