Question:
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh Mufti,

Is it permissible to work for a big pharma company in their compliance department? We hear all this controversy regarding big pharma and their quest for greed & unethical practices to maximize profits. The company in question manufactures medications for chronic and complex diseases as well as for depression and much more.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is permissible to work for a big pharmaceutical company in their compliance department provided that one’s job description itself is Shari’ah compliant. As for the controversies and the unethical practices of the company, the employee is not responsible for that. However, should he wish to be considerate of that, then that is his choice.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
