Working without work permit

Fatwaa ID: 1337

Question:
I got my PR last month. Before that, I had work permit under student visa. Due to some complications my PR process took longer than expected. As a result, I was out of work permit for about 2.5 months. During this period of time my employer suggested to continue working and they paid me in cash. My question, was my income halal and can I use those money? I have not used those money yet. I had some savings and I spent from that. My employer also paid taxes to the govt. The way my employer did it, my employer showed one of his/her relatives as an employee and the payment was deposited in their account. Tax was deducted from the payment. My employer then withdrew the rest of the money and paid me in cash.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
