Question:
Assalamualaikum did the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم use soap on his hair or just water when taking ghusl

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When taking a bath, Rasulullaah ﷺ would wash his blessed head and hair with marshmallow, a natural herb used as shampoo, when taking a bath. See the following hadith,

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي الله عنها عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ.

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (R) narrates that Nabi ﷺ would wash his (blessed) head with marshmallow while he was in the state of janaabah. [Abu Dawood 256]
