Question:
Salam Mufti Saab
What if you prayed a fard salah, then discovered that you prayed in the wrong direction but this is because your compass told you something wrong? Do you have to redo the salah if the qiblah you prayer in was based on false information? What is the opinion of all 4 madhabib on this matter?
جزاكم الله خيرا
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
If one prays towards a direction after applying his due diligence to identify the qiblah (taharri) and comes to know afterwards that the direction was wrong, then his salaah will be valid. He will not have to repeat it. However, if he did not apply his due diligence, then the salaah will have to be repeated. In the enquired situation, you state that you used a compass. That is sufficient in trying to identify the qiblah. Your salaah was valid.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
