Question:
as-Salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh respected mufti saab,

What is the ruling for doing wudhu with soapy water? If two characteristics have changed (the taste and colour – adding soaps can make the water murky, and taste of soap too)? Is it permissible acc to hanafi fiqh to purify oneself from ritual impurity with soapy water?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, water has three essential characteristics: taste, smell and color. If one of these characteristics change, then it will not be suitable for wudhu. In the enquired situation, soap water would not be suitable for wudhu as the characteristics of water do not remain.
