Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.

Is it permissible to recite surat Yaseen 40 times for shifa for an ill person?

Is this mentioned in a Hadeeth?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The recitation of the Qur’aan in general is a source of shifaa. Surah Yaseen specifically has not been established to be for shifaa. Likewise, the practice in question of reciting it 40 times is not established from Nabi ﷺ or the illustrious Sahaabah (R). One may recite it as many times as he wishes. The practice is reference may be an experimented practice. However, importance should not be given to any specific number nor should it be regarded to be something masnoon. If one regards it to be masnoon, then that will be a bid’ah.
