Question:
Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu Mufti saab,
If someone insults another Muslim’s mother or wife, what is the best islamic approach to deal with such people?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
At the outset, it does not behoove a true Muslim to be foul-mouthed. A Muslim must be conscious of every word that he utters as they are being documented and he will have to account for them. Furthermore, to insult another person’s mother or wife indicates towards the low and debased nature of an individual. He has now attacked the honor of an innocent third person. He will have to resolve this in this world of the Hereafter.
Nevertheless, it is understandable that a person would take offense and become enraged if his mother or wife is insulted. That is from the ghayrah of a man. However, he should keep his cool and continue to manifest his true Islamic manners. He should not retaliate by insulting the other person’s mother or wife. He should not use any vulgar or obscene language. He should understand that this person’s insulting of his mother or wife does not have any affect on them. Rather, they are being rewarded for this. The angels are responding on their behalf. He may make it clear to the other person that he does not appreciate this form of behavior. Should the person persist with their ignorant attitude, then he should walk away.
This is something that is difficult but maintaining it allows for the brotherhood to thrive and flourish. The other person will observe the good manners of this person and perhaps learn from him. He may even come and apologize afterwards. Treat those who wrong you with kindness. It has a great effect in the longer run.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
