Zabiha halal food in America, Halal Guys, Hamza Madina

Fatwaa ID: 2373

As Salaam Alaikum,

How can one find out if Muslim owned restaurants are using hand slaughtered meat and not machine slaughtered meat. Does Hamza Madina and Halal Guys serve zabiha halal meat.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A person is affected by what he eats. His food has an effect on his ‘ibaadah and du’aa. Eating haraam even mistakenly has a negative impact on a person. The degeneration we see today has a lot to do with the carelessness or ignorance in regards to what is consumed.

It is indeed unfortunate that there is so much abuse of the term “halal” in the market. It is a known fact that most places, including Muslim owned eateries, serve mechanically slaughtered meat under the guise of halal and many will serve anything and everything and claim to be halal as a marketing scheme. It is therefore difficult to simply rely on the establishment’s claim of being halal. Even claiming to be “zabiha halal” is not sufficient. A certificate too is not sufficient unless it is from a reliable source. Further verification is necessary. However, this would not be possible or feasible for the average person as they would be unaware of what to really search for.

Reputable and reliable certification boards assist in making this matter easy for the people. In America, one may rely on HFSAA and HMS for this. We are not aware of any other reliable certification boards in America. The general consumers should reach out to their local eateries and strongly encourage them to get certified. The customers deserve to be content regarding what they are eating.

Hamza Madina and Halal Guys are unfortunately not halal. They both serve mechanically slaughtered meat. Hamza Madina has informed us telephonically that they get their chicken from Noor al Jabal. Noor al Jabal provides mechanically slaughtered chicken. Halal Guys had previously told us through correspondence on social media that they do not necessarily serve zabiha/hand slaughtered chicken. One of their certifications on their website also clearly mention that they use mechanically slaughtered chicken. We encourage you to reach out to both of them and encourage them to opt for halal options and get certified as well by HFSAA or HMS. When customers show demand for something, then the restaurants will comply. If you become the means of a place becoming halal, you will receive the rewards for it from Allaah Ta’aala.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
