Zakaah distribution

Fatwaa ID: 527

Question:
asalamualaikum wrwb mufti saab
If a person started his/her ZAKAT DISTRIBUTION in the first week of Ramadan then should it be given every year in Ramadan or Can the distribution start early for example a month or two before Ramadan?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is not clear what you mean by zakaah distribution. Zakaah should be distributed on one’s zakaah date or soon after without unnecessary delay. It may also be given in advance, in which case the zakaatable wealth will have to be assessed again on the zakaah date. If there is any deficiency, then the balance will have to be paid.
If you are enquiring about zakaah assessment date, then that must be done on your zakaah date. This is a specific date and cannot be changed around. The zakaah date is permanent unless you reach a flat zero. Your zakaah date is the first time you owned the minimum nisaab amount. If you do not remember the exact date, you should apply your best discretion and choose a date. You will have to adhere to that date moving forward.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
