Zakaah funds to distribute Qur’aan to non-Muslims

Fatwaa ID: 2091

Assalamalaikum Mufti Sb. Please advise.
There is one Islamic foundation in India who is asking to contribute to distribute Free copy of Quran and Islamic Literature to Non Muslims.
The foundation has said that it will also accept zakaah. My question ia can we pay zakaah money for this purpose?
Jazakallah Khairan.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Distributing Qur’aans and Islamic literature for free to non-Muslims is certainly a noble cause. However, it is not a zakaah eligible cause. You may not give your zakaah funds to them. Your zakaah would be invalid.

It is unfortunate that many organizations abuse zakaah funds. They will be accountable for their abuse. Allaah Ta’aala is not in need of anyone’s da’wah and contributions. If someone wants to do any form of good, it should be in the correct manner.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
