Question:
When a masjid distributes ZAKAH to a married woman, does that wealth belong to the woman alone, or the family (i.e. her husband)? And is this practice permissible/recommended?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Zakaah eligibility is determined on an individual basis. If the masjid assessed the wife’s financial condition and found her to be eligible and thus gave her zakaah funds, then that will belong to her alone. It will not belong to the family. She may spend it on them if she wishes.
