Zakaah money for cat

Fatwaa ID: 2081

Assalamalaikum Mufti Saab.

Can we use zakat money for the treatment of a cat which belongs to our building watch man.
The cat used to be very playful and active but suddenly it became very lathergic and started to sleep always. When we showed it to the veterinary doctor he said maybe it might have met with an accident and because of that some internal organs got displaced due to some tissue damage, now it needs to be operated in the bigger hospital. As the expenses are more our building watchman can’t afford it. As myself and my children love the cat very much, we are very much moved by this incident, so can we use the zakat amount for the treatment of the cat? Please reply.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. We make du’aa that Allaah Ta’aala grants the cat full shifaa.

A cat is not an eligible recipient of zakaah. You may not use zakaah funds for the treatment of the cat. If the cat’s owner is eligible to receive zakaah, you may give zakah funds to him and he may then use it for the cat if he wants to. Alternatively, you may use nafl sadaqah funds or your personal money for it. You will be rewarded for your kindness.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
