Zakaah of a 16 year old girl

Fatwaa ID: 1028

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم وَ رَحْمَةُ الله ِ و َ بَرَكَاتُهُ

Mufti sahab,
Someone has asked;

“My daughter is 16 years old, alhamdulillah. She has had $600 in her bank account and 2.5 tola of gold in her possession for over a lunar year now. Does she have to pay zakaah?”
(She doesn’t earn any income. The money is pocket money collected over time and the gold was bought for her by her parents)

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The girl in reference is liable to pay zakaah. Zakaah is based on ownership, not employment status. On her annual zakaah date, which is the date she first possessed nisaab, she will add all her gold, cash and other zakaatable assets together and pay 2.5% of the total. It should be noted that “cash” includes savings and pocket/spare change.

From the details of the query, it seems that she is beyond her zakaah date. It also seems that this is her first time paying zakaah. If that is the case, then she will have to backdate for the previous years, where financially applicable.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
