Question:
Assalamualaikum.
Respected Mufti sahib
I have 2 questions:
- Does zakaat have to be paid on money in an investment account or only on the dividend?
- If a lady is pregnant and finding it difficult to fast, can she use her discretion and not fast, or does she need a pious, Muslim doctor to tell her not to fast? What if she has a non-Muslim doctor? Eg: She is vomiting all the time and is weak. She doesn’t feel the baby move the whole day
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
- We presume that the investment account in reference is Shari’ah compliant. The following answer is for that. If the investment account is Shari’ah non-compliant, then the answer may be different. The funds in a Shari’ah compliant investment account as well as the dividends therefrom are subject to zakaah.
- May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for her. She may apply her genuine discretion and miss a fast for the said reason. She does not need to consult a doctor. She will make qadhaa afterwards.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
