Question:
Assalamu Alaykum
Just wanted to ask if a person has to pay zakat on their savings when they suffer from bipolar disorder and is dependent on medication to keep well and stable? What is the ruling on this?
JazakAllah Khairan
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
At the outset, zakaah is applicable on all zakaatable assets, including savings, bank balances, investments, cash in hand, pocket money and spare change. It is not for savings only. Nevertheless, a person who suffers from bipolar disorder will be liable for zakaah unless he has permanently lost complete awareness and judgment. If the loss is temporary or not complete, then he will not be exempt.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
