Zakaah to in-laws

Fatwaa ID: 2172

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
We’re told we should give zakat to those family members who are eligible for it, does this include in laws relatives?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is more rewardable to give zakaah to one’s relatives as one would be joining ties of kinship. This is obviously provided that they are eligible. Relatives includes one’s in-laws. One may assist them with his/her zakaah funds. The only people one may not give zakaah to are his ascendants, descendants and spouses.

That being said, it should be noted that it is not necessary to mention that the funds are from zakaah. One may simply refer to it as a gift. One should give the funds wisely without making anyone feel bad.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
