Question:
Assalamualykum
My mil is legible for zakaah. I know her children can’t give her zakaah. Is the daughter in law allowed to dispense her zakaah to her as the son is looking after both his wife and mother? She gets a minimum amount every month from him.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
It is permissible to give zakaah to one’s mother-in-law provided that she is eligible to receive zakaah. One will be rewarded manifold as this is a form of maintaining family ties as well. The daughter-in-law is not the same as the daughter.
It should be noted that when giving someone zakaah funds, it is not necessary to refer to it as zakaah. It may be referred to as a gift.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
