Zakaah to private Islamic school

Fatwaa ID: 2162

Question:
Assalamualaykum mufti sahib.i need to ask if we can give zakat money to the private islamic school for girls in UK. As you know it always needs funds and support to run such schools. Jazakillahu khairan

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, there are designated avenues to which zakaah can be given. Zakaah cannot be given to unqualifying avenues even if they are good causes or in need. An Islamic school, institute or organization in itself does not qualify as a legitimate recipient of zakaah. Zakaah funds cannot be given to them. The zakaah will be invalid. You may however assist them with nafl sadaqah instead.

That being said, many institutes have a scheme in place where the zakaah funds received are given to eligible poor and needy students. That is permissible. The eligible students may then use it as they wish, including taking care of their study costs. Unfortunately, there is a lot of abuse, misuse and deception by many institutes. If the institute you wish to donate to has stated that they accept zakaah, you may consult with them or someone reputable who may be aware of the financial management of the institute to find out further details of how that is done.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
