Zakaah to someone who has gold saved up for daughter’s wedding

Fatwaa ID: 2124

Question:
AsalamuAlikum Mufti sb.
Hope you are doing well today . My question is , if a relative of your is earning low and they ask for zakkat but they have a good amount of gold on which they become also eligible for zakat but they are saving it for their daugther wedding . Is it permitted to give zakat to those relatives ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, a person is eligible to receive zakaah when his zakaatable assets and non-essential wealth together are valued to be less than the nisaab amount. In the enquired situation, you mention that the person has gold beyond the nisaab amount. Accordingly, it is not permissible for you to give him zakaah funds. It is haraam for him to ask others for zakaah.

It should be noted that the saved gold in question may be subject to zakaah. Irrespective of the purpose one saves it for, gold is a zakaatable asset and will be subject to zakaah. The person in question will add together all his zakaatable assets, including his gold, savings, cash at hand, etc. He will then deduct any current debts and thereafter pay zakaah on the balance. We suggest that he sits with a competent scholar and seeks appropriate zakaah advice.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
