Question:
Asalaamu alaykum dear Mufti saheb there is a student who is studying in Cape Town, the student comes from a well off family however does not have the support of the family.
Can Zakaat be utilized for the studies for the year ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for the student and guide his family. If the student is baaligh and he personally meets the zakaah eligibility criteria, then he may be given zakaah. Zakaah eligibility is determined by considering all his zakaatable wealth as well as his non-essential non-zakaatable wealth. If either of these two reach the nisaab threshold, then he would not be eligible to receive zakaah. If both are below the nisaab threshold, then he will be eligible. The financial condition of his family is irrelevant in determining his eligibility and/or liability.
