Is there zakat on gift cards and prepaid cards that are in my ownership on my zakat date?
If I have many gift cards and prepaid cards that I haven’t used, would I calculate them into my zakatable assets or not?
Gift cards e.g uber eats gift card, Walmart gift card or any gift card where it’s restricted to a store.
Prepaid cards such as a “the perfect gift” prepaid Mastercard or any other prepaid card which can be used anywhere freely like a normal payment card.
May Allah reward you all for your service of deen. Ameen.
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Gift cards and prepaid cards are loaded with money. They are used in place of cash. They are claims on the company. Accordingly, gift cards and prepaid cards are subject to zakaah. They will be added to one’s annual zakaah calculation.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
